Minister Promotes the Bible as Curriculum in Public Schools

In New Jersey, there is a campaign under way to get public support for teaching the Bible in public schools.

A minister is collecting signatures on a petition to allow elective Bible classes in Camden's public schools. Pastor Eddie Torres has failed to persuade the school board to offer classes on “the Bible as history and literature.” So he is going directly to the people, hoping to force a referendum on the issue.

Torres and his group, The Heart of New Jersey, say the curriculum aims to teach the Bible “without imposing doctrine.” A member of the Camden School Board worries that the class could raise constitutional questions.

But developers of the curriculum say it is already being taught in 170 school districts in 32 states.
