Media and the “Modern Era”

Dear Mark Shea and Catholic Exchange:

I just want to thank you for all you do for Catholic Exchange and those that read the various articles. I always enjoy reading your articles. They are so full of wisdom, yet are witty and fun to read at the same time. I just had to laugh at your latest. It does “crack me up” when the media drags out these folks. I have not determined whether they do it out of ignorance, just to stir things up, both, or some other reason I just haven't figured out yet.

As a side note, my boss is on the road to Catholicism from an upbringing in Evangelical Protestantism. We have had numerous heart-to-heart conversations, and, through my own faith journey and interest in apologetics, the Holy Spirit has used me to help him understand the Catholic faith by providing reading materials on various topics as they surface. I mention this, because one of the books I gave him to read was By What Authority, and he has read it twice! His comment was that he is beginning to understand that what he was brought up to believe (about the Catholic Church) was in error, but because he was taught this over a lifetime (he is 44), he is having to “de-program” himself to a certain degree. I have also given him articles from Catholic Exchange which are good, short, informative materials easy to digest.

Thanks again! Know that you have made a difference.

Keep up the good work,

Bill

Bill:

Thanks for your kind words. I think most of the media's approach to the faith is driven by ignorance. They have a rolodex with a few names they turn to again and again. Actually, what's interesting is how this papal transition did have some fresh faces. George Weigel, for instance, was used extensively by MSNBC. In addition, the new media have forced the mainstream media to admit the voices of bloggers and other alternative journalists. I even had a couple of interviews on MSNBC, as did other Catholic Exchange regulars. So there is hope that the old guard's hegemony is being broken at last.

May God bless your work in the vineyard through Jesus Christ. Please extend my best wishes to your boss!
