Protesters who say Kathleen Kennedy Townsend is a poor role model for Catholic women because of her pro-abortion views held a rally outside graduation ceremonies at an all-girls Catholic school in Bethesda where the former lieutenant governor was scheduled to speak.
Townsend, the failed Democratic candidate for governor last year, attended the Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart until her sophomore year, and with her background in public service and education seemed a perfect choice to address the 83 graduates, said school spokeswoman Helen Drury Macsherry.
Townsend's political stances were not part of the decision to invite her, Macsherry said. “That really didn't enter into it,” she said. As for abortion, “it's not something she'll be addressing at all.”
Townsend did not return a phone call for comment.
Janet M. Baker, a Gaithersburg accountant, organized the protest, which she said will include some alumnae of the school.
“We think Kathleen Kennedy Townsend is a poor choice for graduation at a Catholic school because her policies differ so much from church teachings,” Baker said.
