It is another sad commentary on the state of marriage in this country.
In Lincoln County, Washington, Mondays are “Divorce Days.”
There, hundreds of marriages are dissolved weekly with just a stroke of a pen.
According to Family News in Focus, Lincoln County is one of the few places in America where a couple can be divorced without a court appearance. Petitions for divorce find their way from around the state to the Lincoln County Courthouse where a judge will spend up to six hours every Monday signing them.
Jason Krafsky, community strategies director of Families Northwest says it is a sad commentary on our culture.
Krafsky points out that [in Washington,] it is harder to erase the charges off a cellular phone bill than it is to erase the names off of a marriage certificate. “I think that is a really sad indication of the times that we are [living] in right now,” Krafsky says.
As a response to this social trend, Krafsky says that many churches in the Pacific Northwest now require couples to complete counseling before they perform a marriage ceremony.
