Kids Can Help Make a Mother’s Day Breakfast

Start Mother's Day off right by treating Mom to breakfast. Kids can help Dad make some yummy treats with these simple recipes from Mommy's Little Helper Cookbook by Karen Brown (Meadowbrook Press).

Banana-Orange Cups

Slice the tops of large oranges and trim the bottoms so the oranges sit level. Scoop out the fruit and put in a bowl. Save the orange shells. Add bite-size pieces of banana to the bowl and stir the fruit together. Spoon the fruit back into the orange shells.

Cinnamon Toast

Place pieces of bread on a cookie sheet. Put in the oven until brown. Remove the cookie sheet, turn the bread over and spread butter on the unbrowned sides. Combine sugar and cinnamon in a bowl. Sprinkle the mixture on the buttered sides of the bread. Return to the oven for a few minutes.

Microwave Applesauce

Peel and slice four large apples into chunks. Place in a microwave-safe bowl and add 1/4 cup of water, 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, and 2 tablespoons of honey. Cover the bowl and cook in the microwave for about four minutes, or until mushy. Use a potato masher to smash the apples into a puree. Sprinkle with cinnamon.

Strawberry-Yogurt Shake

Pour 1 cup of milk into a blender. Add 1 cup of fresh or frozen strawberries. Blend until the mixture is smooth. Add 1 cup of strawberry yogurt and blend again.
