The New Year inevitably brings with it resolutions. We resolve to weigh less, run more, and do better. For various reasons–usually alcohol consumption or sleep deprivation– when the clock strikes twelve, people feel empowered, invincible, and ready to take on the world. After a few weeks however, the drive and desire for self improvement is replaced by complacency and an acceptance that we just cannot change. Resolutions are broken and Valentine’s chocolate is consumed. It is a tough thing to change; people by nature are inclined to conform and accept, so when the prospect of change is presented it can be unnerving. So don’t change. Don’t make a resolution or a promise. Instead, take a walk. There is no need to walk alone, if you choose your date right you will be accompanied by over 50,000 people.
On January 22nd, 1973, over 40 million innocent people were sentenced to death. On that date, the US Supreme Court decriminalized abortion in this country, shaking the moral core of the entire nation. Since Roe v Wade, people have marched to the steps of the Capitol building in protest of the decision each year on January 22nd. Every year, protestors from across the globe unite, serving as a voice for those who were silenced.
The sanctity of life has been brutalized in a culture of death for the past thirty years. Now, more than ever before, our society’s concept of morality is grossly disfigured. When civic leaders are molesting underage interns, and ministers are hiring gay prostitutes, it is near impossible to deduce that our moral standards are acceptable. When Britney Spears was photographed in public last month lacking her Fruit of the Looms, all the public could muster was a sigh and a chuckle. People even commented on the scar she received from her caesarean section. We have reached a point where it is acceptable and entertaining to see a single mother of two get hammered and stumble out of a car half naked. We are more than comfortable with sex, lies, and their videotapes.
It’s time to be uncomfortable. We have an obligation to stand up for what is good and true. There is no better time to stand than at The March for Life along with over 50,000 others. We owe it to the millions of children who have been killed and the hundreds of thousands slaughtered each day. The March is only a few blocks along Constitution Avenue and only takes a couple of hours. This will be the first time in my life I will achieve my New Year’s Resolution. (Last year I was going to give up coffee. I became the first person to break his resolution while making his resolution.). This year, instead of going to the gym, I’m taking a walk.
