Is There Really a “Goddess Project”?

Dear Catholic Exchange:

FAITH, HOPE, and CHARITY in a GOD, GODDESS, or BOTH?

I just read the article on your website (“The Goddess Project“) and couldn`t help but wonder at what direction men and women-kind are moving these days?

There seems to be a real need to blend both a male and female spiritual presence in our lives so as to complete our earthly and heavenly existence. This need not only surfaces among Catholics but many other religions as well. What are your present thoughts on this new phenomenom and do you see it evolving? Do you think its simply the afterthoughts of the dying feminist movement who are really just trying to hang on to some kind of cause to justify their past failures?

Thanks,

Art

Dear Art,

This sort of stuff is popular among the Chattering Classes, but it is not making many inroads with ordinary believers. Many of the people who are pushing for goddess worship are coming to realize that they will never be able to accomplish their agenda within the Catholic Church. Indeed, much of the push for this has already passed its sell-by date. There was, for instance, a silly move afoot 20 years or so ago to neutralize God. About all that's left of that is the scattered folks in pews who have a scruple about using the masculine pronoun. Eventually, people with determined agendas will realize they have to choose between the Faith or the death of their agenda. I expect (though I do not hope) that they will leave the Church, as Matthew Fox did.

Outside the Church, I think we could well see a resurgence of goddess worship and good old fashioned pagan polytheism. A culture, like a man, who abandons belief in God generally doesn't believe in nothing, but in anything.
