Indecent Web Sites to Have New Domain

MARINA DEL RAY, California — The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) approved a new domain name for pornographic web content June 1 — .xxx.

ICM Registry, the company that submitted the application to register the new domain claims the new suffix will help to regulate porn, protecting children from illicit content. Websites that register to use the suffix will be expected to put in place measures to protect children from unwittingly viewing their content; however, so far there are no plans for mandatory compulsion for pornographic sites to switch from the more common and less expensive .com to the new .xxx.

ICM Registry Chairman and President Stuart Lawley said that viewers will be given more power to only view the content they intend to by creation of the new domain. “By moving forward with .xxx, the online adult-entertainment industry is taking part in a pro-active approach to its presence on the Internet, making an identifiable commitment to responsible behavior and to the development of best business practices,” Lawley said, according to a pcpro.co.uk report.
