by Pavel Chichikov
I asked for a sign, received a siren
A howl of horns, a warning of war
Down came burning birds in columns
Smoke and fire, traps and snares
Down through columns of twisting fire
Burning eagles hunting hares –
Count in the oak trees' blackened hollows
Rings of before, rings of tomorrow
Quietly quietly now, not yet
The telling re-telling of alphabets
A for an axis – futures past
Z for a peace that will not last
But God have mercy on one and all
The burning wings in the sky that fall
