Horoscopes Not Innocent Fun

Dear Catholic Exchange and Catholics United for the Faith,

I am a regular supporter of CUF and I was very pleased to see the 7-12-05 response on the Catholic Exchange daily e-mail “Is it ok to read horoscopes just for fun?” You dealt with the issue clearly and I am hopeful that many will understand the problem of opening the door to evil now.

Recently a relative of mine was planning a First Holy Communion party for her eldest daughter. The entertainment for the children was supposed to be a fortune teller. I was very concerned when I heard. It is difficult to speak up about something that a culture considers nothing odd. But I did tell her that this opened the door to evil not only for her children but for others attending. Children are impressionable and seeing something like this in such a condoned setting can allow them down the road to accept it in other settings and lead them very far astray. She responded that her child knew it was not real, but she then asked her little girl what she thought of the fortune teller coming. Well, the very bright child responded she was going to ask if she was going to get a puppy and if her parents were going to get divorced. Obviously the child believed the fortune teller really “knew” the future. My shocked relative said she was going to replace the “entertainment.” I followed up our conversation with e-mailing her specific parts from the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

It may be awkward to speak up but we are called to “bear witness to the truth.” Of course, it must be done with concern, love, tactfulness yet with clarity. We all are required to speak up when we see error. If enough people do, with the grace of God, we can turn the tide on this culture. Thank you both for your steadfast exposition of truth.

May the Holy Spirit direct you,
