Heston Withdraws Step Further from Public Gaze

WASHINGTON, — Actor Charlton Heston, 78, renowned as one of the few great Hollywood stars with a solid Christian faith and as a supporter of pro-life, pro-family causes, has taken a major step out of the public limelight. This weekend he retired as president of the National Rifle Association, citing his recent diagnosis with Alzheimer's.

Heston remained prominent long after the peak of his film career in the 1960s, partly because of “his outspokenness about conservative causes, including opposition to abortion,” media said.

He was an early advocate of civil rights for blacks in America and attended Martin Luther King's 1963 March on Washington alongside Sidney Poitier and Harry Belafonte.
