Eph 6:10-20 / Lk 13:31-35
It’s hard not to be optimistic when everything around us is going well and moving forward smoothly. When our friends are getting ahead and things are looking bright for us too, we’re inclined to close our eyes and pretend that this is the way it’s going to be forever. Sooner or later, something comes to wake us up and breaks our illusion of non-stop success and comfort forever. And then we learn who we are and what we’re made of.
Easy times can lull us into forgetting life’s real challenges and dangers. We can take so much for granted and expect so much as our right — when it’s not our right at all. We can forget that everything we have is gift — and it’s only on short term loan at that.
St. Paul tells us today to take faith as our shield — and what wise advice that is. In the whirlwind that is our life, there is in the end nothing that we can count on, nothing that matters, except our bond with the Lord, the life-giving bond that we establish when we say to him, “I trust you, Lord. I give you my heart, and my all.”
He is our haven in the whirlwind!
