Phil 3:17-4:1 / Lk 16:1-8
We are living in times where the pace and breadth of development and change are so rapid and so sweeping that we barely dare close our eyes for a catnap lest we miss something important. We need only think the words “Internet” or “dot-com” to feel winds of change blow in our faces.
None of it has happened by accident. Hundreds of thousands of extraordinarily bright, creative, and industrious minds have collaborated to create this new world. And very little of it happened without immense exertion and sacrifice. How many missed vacations and late nights at the office or in the laboratory were expended in advance as the price of the seemingly easy fortunes of the proliferating dot-com millionaires? They are beyond counting, as too many spouses could tell us.
Whatever the era, progress has always had a price and it has never been cheap. Yet why is it, Jesus asks, that while most of us recognize the price to be paid for secular progress, most remain blind to the similar price to be paid for spiritual growth? Is it, perhaps, a matter of priorities? Probably.
As Jesus said on another occasion, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be.” Before it’s too late, make sure you’ve labeled your treasures correctly.
