Halfway to Heaven

by Ed Halbig

Come find me, you whispered,

Or so I thought,

Or dreamed,

Or wished.

Whatever it was,

I awoke at dawn searching,

Wondering,

Hoping to find

You.

I sensed you were up there, in the foothills on the

Switchbacks and forests and

Powerline trails clogged with glacial debris.

You challenged me to find you so I

Drove to the mountain and

Mounted the Mongoose and fought off my fear

Of falling.

Pedaling up

And down,

Over rocks

Through two streams to

The edge of this earth not once but twice

I felt lost

But trusted your direction.

Overlooking gorge and river and

Railway so tiny below,

There you were!

Halfway to heaven,

Just as I thought

Or dreamed

Or wished.

How wondrous is the power of your creation!

Forgive me for ever doubting your call.
