Girl Surprises Doctors, Recovers From Coma

Stanford, CA — Last week, doctors gave 2-year-old Kayla Resendez only a slim chance of coming out of a coma in the wake of a head-on collision on Highway 156.

On Monday, those doctors were proven wrong as the little girl awakened at the Stanford University Medical Center. She apparently is in pretty good condition overall.

The toddler, her mother, Kathryn Williamson, 25 of Modesto, and Williamson's fiance, 23-year-old Daniel Patereau of Turlock, were on the way to Monterey June 6 when they were hit head-on. Williamson and Patereau were killed, and Kayla was removed from the wreckage unconscious.

The couple was due to be married next month.

“We have seen a miracle happen right under our eyes, yet we are feeling tragedy at the same time,” said Leona Radich, Williamson's grandmother. “Kayla is a survivor, by the grace of God, but the people next to her, who loved her dearly, were killed.”

Woman in India Dies From Abortion

Fazilka, India — Karima Bai (35), of the Dhobi Ghat locality died earlier this week due to an infection which she developed after the abortion of her pregnancy by an untrained midwife (dai)of Odanwali about five days earlier.

According to reports, Karima Bai, wife of laborer Puran Singh, already had three sons and a daughter. She was admitted to the local Civil Hospital after her condition deteriorated.

Puran Singh and his relatives alleged that the police had not initiated any action against the suspect midwife on the plea that the hospital authorities had not informed the city police about the death of his wife.

As the police had not got the official death report, it was yet to prepare the inquest papers. Hence, the post-mortem examination of the deceased woman had not been done till noon Tuesday.

This was the second death in the past week after an abortion in the city. Last week, Parmeshwari Bai of Mandi Hazoor Singh village also died in similar circumstances.
