Homily of the Day

Friday of the Twenty-Second Week in Ordinary Time

There’s always something quite enticing and intriguing about something new. It’s fresh. It’s the latest. It’s “in”. Everyone would seem to talk about it and we would want to be a part of it.

On the other hand, we have the old practices. They may consist of the old traditions, the usual, the routine, and the ordinary things. Another name for the old practices may be the “comfort zone,” where things are familiar and we feel safe in doing the same things over and over.

Jesus challenges us to initiate ourselves with the unfamiliar. He challenges us to get out of our comfort zones and try different ideas. It may be something like singing a new song or simply singing an old song with a new tune. The point is to try something different or see it from a different point of view.

To discern, develop, and transform from the old to the new requires commitment. It may require a review of our values and morals and perhaps even time and effort to change. What is important is that we are willing and dedicated to do it.

Let us pray that we will become more open, as we renew ourselves in God’s love.
