For Hollywood Stars, There’s No Need for Daddy

by Ed Vitagliano

(AgapePress) – In a town that seems to pride itself on breaking every possible taboo, some of Hollywood's most popular female stars are thumbing their noses not only at traditional marriage, but even the concept of fatherhood.

According to USA Today, headliners like Calista Flockhart, Rosie O'Donnell, Madonna, Jodie Foster, and Sandra Bernhard have gleefully had children outside wedlock. The method has been varied, as the women have obtained their children through adoption, artificial insemination, or the old-fashioned way — all sans husband.

Camryn Manheim, star of the ABC drama The Practice, is expecting her out-of-wedlock child in April.

“It's the way of the future,” Manheim said, “so people better start opening up their minds and expanding their horizons. You're going to see it over and over again.”

O'Donnell parroted that line. “What a traditional family is in 2001 is different from what it was in 1980,” she said. “I tell my kids what makes a family is love.”

None of the women appeared concerned that their children would grow up without a father, although a recent study added to the scientific evidence that perhaps they should be. Researchers Cheryl Buehler and Kay Pasley reported in the Journal of Early Adolescence that merely the presence of a father in the home was beneficial to children.

“For the most part, children who lived with their biological parents had fewer behavioral problems and better general adjustment in school” than children who lived in single-parent or step-family situations, the researchers said. Moreover, the study's data confirmed what traditionalists have long argued — that it is fatherlessness itself that best explains the increased likelihood of problems for children.

“Family structure was associated with six of seven indicators of the child's adjustment,” the study said.

Dr. Donald E. Wildmon, President of the pro-family organization American Family Association, reacted to the parental trend in Hollywood.

“Many Hollywood people seem to think they know better than the Creator,” Wildmon said, “but even statistics declare His wisdom.”
