Early in December, a few of the moms from my parish were gathered watching our young children play basketball. We were talking about the various household projects we had started but just never finished. One needed to finish painting her kitchen, another has a third floor halfway through renovations in need of repair. I had a master bedroom that was three-quarters wallpapered.
I had bought the wallpaper last February, a splurge after our tax return came in. In my defense, I did complete wallpapering the kitchen and my sons' room, quite an accomplishment seeing that this was done in one-hour spurts while my husband entertained the children. By the time I reached our bedroom, the weather had gotten warmer and I had lost my enthusiasm for working on big projects in the house. And so it sat, the somewhat wallpapered room with the wallpaper rolls waiting patiently in the closet. I decided I was going to finish the project Christmas week. My husband was on vacation and I thought I might get some free time. I did manage to squeeze out an hour, but the job still wasn't quite finished. There was about 10 feet of border that still needed to go up, which I had once again successfully put on the back burner for the past three weeks.
This past Saturday, I was once again at basketball practice, and my friend Karen remarked that she was so inspired by Mary Kochan's article on organizing her kitchen that had appeared here on CE that she actually finished painting her kitchen! Well, then I felt like I really needed to finish up my bedroom. After all, I'm writing about productivity – I need to practice what I preach! So, I asked my husband to please move the dresser that was blocking my path to the wall and I set to work. I finished the border and even hung pictures in our room! My husband was amazed that the project was finally done and I feel so much better walking into that room now. I no longer have that project hanging over my head.
