Empty Church

By Pavel Chichikov

Man and woman in confession

Seated one each side of God –

Eternity bent forward, listened,

Leaning on a pew of wood

'He did murder,' said the woman,

Whispering beside His ear –

'She betrayed You,' said the man,

Loud enough so she could hear

'She received a stolen treasure

From a gang of thieves,' he said –

'Thief himself,' the woman muttered,

'Women find him in their beds'

'Malice, gossip, defamation,

That's her stock in trade – my wife ' –

'His is false ingratiation,

In Your back a rusty knife'

God Almighty, Lord and Savior,

Omnipresent, full of pain,

Wrinkles up His human brow

Feels the pang of death again

On the cross He sees before Him

Stupid faces, mocking, mad –

Now confessing, blessing, shrives them

Just as though He never had
