2 Sam 11:1-10,13-17 / Mk 4:26-34
As we listen to today’s Old Testament reading with its ugly tale of a cold-blooded murder of convenience, our thoughts go back to David the shepherd boy, the youth who slew Goliath, the young man whose pure heart made him the only choice for king. Where did that young man go? And where did this murderous King David come from?
The murderer was not made overnight, but only very slowly across many years, with countless compromises with the truth, in which he gave away a piece of his soul each time. Living that way can become a habit, especially for one with the means to cover his tracks or fend off challenges. What is best about a person can die by stages, almost unnoticed. And when physical death finally comes, one can say in truth, “This man or that woman actually died years ago.”
How do we prevent that happening to us? How do we avoid the fate of Dorian Grey? We do it by keeping the lights on inside our soul, and that’s only possible if we remain connected every day to our only power source, the Lord. He will help us to see whatever is there, and not be afraid, because He brings with Him not only the power to see but the power and the desire to heal.
Let Him keep your inner light burning brightly and you’ll never have to fear what you’ll see.
