Counsel the Doubtful!

Mark 9:24

Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, "I believe; help my unbelief!"

It would be lovely if we were all human calculator units with binary systems whose faith switch was simply and clearly labeled "On" and "Off."  But God, in His rather inconvenient wisdom, decreed that we should be considerably more complicated than this.  Thus, the father in today's Gospel gives the thoroughly human cry of belief coupled with unbelief.  We're all pretty much in his boat and the first big trial to hit us in the face quickly reveals that nearly all of us are pretty ambivalent about just how much we trust God.  Christianity is, in part, designed to do this.  Peter found that out when he made loud noises about his deathless faith in Christ that would willingly follow Him wherever He went — and then wimped out a few hours later in front of a young servant girl as his Master was on trial for His life.   We are, none of us, the stuff of heroes without the help of God.  But with His help and counsel, we can act with resolve.
