Children Who Leave the Faith

Dear Catholic Exchange:

I raised my children in the Catholic Church, but two of them do not go to Mass since becoming adults. My grandsons do not attend religious education. These two adult children do not appear to take this subject seriously, and I am worried about them and their children.

Thank You

Janice Gregoire

Dear Ms. Gregoire,

The most important factors in helping loved ones to return to the faith are the example of our own life of faith and union with God, as well as the offering of prayers on their behalf. It is important to make use of the natural relationship that exists between parents and children; a relationship that remains even when parents and children no longer share the same faith. Care should be taken to maintain the natural bond. Differences in religion can easily lead family members to sacrifice this bond due to the lack of a shared faith. Ironically, when the natural bond becomes wounded because of different beliefs, the possibility of a shared faith becomes more greatly endangered. So until such a time that our loved ones rediscover their faith, we are encouraged to continue to love them as the natural bond demands. Especially in the case of parents, unconditional love can water the seed of faith and assist the workings of grace.
