SOUTH BEND, IN – In a stinging example of the need for vigilance, administrators at Saint Mary's College in South Bend are now saying that the $1,700 used to send four students and one faculty member to a pro-abortion rally was wrong. St. Mary's, which bills itself as “the nation's premier Catholic women's college”, has its pro-life students in disbelief. “As a pro-lifer, I didn't personally agree with them. When I found out the college paid for it. I couldn't believe it,” said one senior.
The College's Center , under the direction of Dr. Meredith Reid Sarkees, approved the grant to attend the conference to encourage youth to “save abortion rights”. However, College spokesman Melanie Engler said “The administration's position is that the decision (to send the students) was wrong.” Commenting on the money, Engler said: “Funding is more than exposure. Funding is endorsing and that is something the college thinks shouldn't have happened here.”
Nick Farmer, the Director of Communications at the College told LifeSite that the College is reviewing the grant process to avoid such situations in the future. When asked if those who organized and approved the outing would be reprimanded, Farmer responded that that was a personnel matter and could not be discussed.
