California homeschoolers won a victory last week when California state education officials withdrew plans to have home schooling declared illegal.
Newly elected state superintendent of education Jack O'Connell is credited with ordering a re-examination of the proposed policy, which had been gathering steam within the department. Education deputy general counsel Michael Hersher is quoted by WorldNetDaily as saying that references in planned legislation that “homeschooling is not legal in California” have been removed from the state Department of Education's website.
“We're simply going to stop saying that every homeschooled child is truant,” Hersher said. “I think homeschooling is as individualized as the students and parents and you can't really generalize. There are children who excel academically and others who are just running the streets.”
