Finite creatures that we are, we can only give so much before we crash. The greatest affection for another soul can propel us but a limited distance before we run out of energy and desire. Love is demanding, even withering at times. Some situations – within the close quarters of family or community life, encompassing illness or dysfunctional personalities – can tax the most generous of souls.
