This coming election year, it appears that marriage will become a defining issue in the United States. Office seekers are going to have to decide whether they stand with the majority of Americans or whether they will stand by and allow the destruction of society's premiere institution, says a broad coalition of pro-family organizations.
The conveners of Marriage Protection Week held a news conference to announce a week of activities, October 12 – 18, during which member groups will contact the millions of voters they represent.
Over 20 of the largest public advocacy groups on life, family, education, religion and freedom have banded together to drive home the protection of marriage as a defining election issue in upcoming elections. This national campaign includes outreach to more than 200,000 churches, national radio broadcasts to millions more people, and public events.
Pro-marriage sentiment has been rising since the Supreme Court decision in Lawrence v. Texas. Recent polls show that most Americans support efforts to protect marriage from counterfeits. The pending decision in the Massachusetts Supreme Court is seen as a constant reminder of the looming threat to marriage that the pro-family organizations say requires a firm response from lawmakers.
