Dear Mark:
We are studying James and in Lesson 4's introduction you quote Lumen Gentium,14. Please explain: “If they fail to respond in thought, word, and deed to that grace, not only shall they not be saved, but they shall be more severely judged.” If not saved one would be going to hell, so what do they mean by “more severely judged?” We have used many of your studies and find them a great help in our spiritual journey.
Thanks,
Mother Jenny

Dear Mother Jenny:
Apparently the torments of hell vary in degree and/or kind according to the nature of our impenitent sin. That would be my guess.
