Bearing Brambles

by Kathryn Mulderink

It’s nature’s way –

roses and raspberries use thorns as defense,

so why should your barbs surprise me?

Why should they deter me,

even if they penetrate deep

beyond the surface?

I am willing to risk my arms and legs

as I reach for the subtle scent of rose

or the delicate sweetness of wild fruit

amidst the tangle of brambles,

and I am willing to sacrifice what is

deep within me

to reach what is subtle and sweet

deep within you…

The birds watch, unmoving,

as I peer into the woods patiently,

letting my eyes adjust until the

red and purple fruits

emerge from the darkness,

and I wish that you were as still

when I patiently peer into you…

hope for pierced and wounded hearts,”
