(AgapePress) – An attorney with the Home School Legal Defense Association says a university that would not allow home-schooled students to enroll has put a band-aid on their problem, but has not addressed the issue of discrimination toward home school students.
Under pressure from home school parents and advocates, Baylor University announced it has resolved five cases of home school graduates who were admitted by the school but then told they must be 18 years of age or possess a GED certificate in order to be enrolled this fall.
Attorney Chris Klicka says while it is true Baylor did work around these particular cases, the school has not resolved the problem of rules that are discriminatory toward home schoolers.
“The fact of the matter is certain deals are being made with different families, and some of those involve the students actually taking the GED or waiting a semester before they go to school so they have time to take a GED,” Klicka says. “We don’t see that in any way as them backing out of their wrong position that they took this past month, where suddenly they’re requiring home schoolers to have to get a GED before admission.”
Klicka says Baylor is in a minority in its policy. He says only a handful of universities still reject home schoolers based on diploma/GED and age criteria.
