Kathleen Sebelius to Speak at Georgetown Commencement Ceremony

In what can only be interpreted as a direct challenge to America’s Catholic bishops, Georgetown University has announced that “pro-choice” Catholic Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and lead architect of the Obama administration’s assault on religious freedom through the HHS contraception mandate, has been invited to speak at one of Georgetown’s several commencement ceremonies.

The Cardinal Newman Society has posted a petition to protest this outrage here: GeorgetownScandal.com.  It has also alerted Washington Cardinal Donald Wuerl and sent a letter to Georgetown President John DeGioia urging him to immediately withdraw the invitation.

Last week  The Cardinal Newman Society released a list of 11 scandalous commencement speakers at Catholic colleges and universities, as well as a report on homosexual “lavender graduations” including one at Georgetown.

The nation’s oldest Catholic and Jesuit university has chosen to honor Sebelius by granting her a prestigious platform at its Public Policy Institute commencement ceremony, despite her role as the lead architect of a healthcare mandate that will force Catholic institutions to pay for contraception, abortifacients and sterilization against their religious beliefs. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has termed the mandate “an unwarranted government definition of religion” that is “alien both to our Catholic tradition and to federal law,” “a violation of personal civil rights” and “a mandate to act against our teachings.”

But Secretary Sebelius’ record on abortion is at least as troubling as the mandate. When Governor of Kansas, Sebelius supported abortion rights and vetoed pro-life legislation.  In 2008, Archbishop Joseph Naumann of Kansas City reportedly told Sebelius, a Roman Catholic, to stop receiving the Eucharist until she publicly recants her position on abortion and makes a “worthy sacramental confession.”

If I may be so bold as to make a prediction: Georgetown throwing down the gauntlet is a watershed moment in the history of the Catholic Church in America. It is a trial balloon sent by the Obama campaign to see if the bishops are serious. If their response is muddled, or tepid, Obama knows how the Catholic vote will go.

I am so horrified at the “so-called” Catholic “Christians” who teach our children in what was once a prestigious educational institution.  Whether they are aware of it or not, the people who defy the Church’s “mandates”, defy God Himself.

May 7th: It is being reported that Joe Biden is coming out in support of gay marriage. I believe that because ‘Catholics’ in public office are being affirmed in their public sin by being permitted to receive Holy Communion as Catholics in good standing, they are not only affirmed in their sin but they move forward aggressively into other areas of public sin and support for evil agendas. At least Kathleen Sebelius’ Bishop told her not to present herself for the Eucharist until after she had made a good confession and had publicly recanted her pro=abortion position.  Those who are being affirmed in their sin are being denied the opportunity of conversion of heart because there are no consequences…this is sad and we need to pray much, especially that the slaughter of so many millions of unborn human babies will stop – STOP THE KILLING!!

I guess one of the biggest things that keep this kind of outrage going is our own reaction.  Look at this very article.
” When Governor of Kansas, Sebelius supported abortion rights and vetoed pro-life legislation.”  Why does this article call her actions support for “abortion rights”?    There is NOTHING right about abortion.  Therefore there is NO right to abortion.  Sebelius supports abortion on demand.  If we are going to get anywhere in this debate, we need to stop using pro-abortion rhetoric.
Abortion on demand is accurate because they do not support “choice”.  The baby gets no choice and oftentimes the mother feels forced into abortion.  The abortion on demand movement wants to insure the availability of abortion to satisfy all consumer demand for it, whether manufactured or not.

  • I signed the petition.  And as an alumnus I called the deGoia (sp?) office.  I was told there was a lot of opposition to this engagement.  I spoke my peace and offered my opinion that despite the opposition there was little doubt in my mind that Georgetown would go forward with this decision.  The Jesuits are not known for their humility.

I completely agree with you. However, I believe that Our Lord Jesus Christ kept His promise to send the Paraclete. With Pentecost near, just 3 weeks away, let us pray for the Gift of the Holy Spirit be re-ignited in the Officials of Georgetown U. and Kathleen Sebelius before she speaks at the commencement. Our prayers will make the difference!

Pray for Washington Cardinal Donald Wuerl ,
Whether or not medjugorje is real, the May 2 message is a good exhortaion.

The worst thing we can do is to appear intimidated or fearful. The best thing we can do, while TRUSTing in “Thy Kingdom Come”, is to keep using our FREE SPEECH to reveal the lies. We shouldn’t be surprised; Jesus warned us about those who are so bent in their ways of deceibt that they “…won’t taste death until they see the Son of God … (MT. 16: 28). The most familiar account of Jesus showing “Righteous Anger” was when “His Father’s House” was defiled (Jn. 2: 15). Catholic institutions are an extension of our “Father’s House”. So, just continue to calmly expose the lies – God will do the rest.

You are right Clement.  The Holy Spirit is still working in our world. Let us pray that the Holy Spirit will also work powerfully within the souls of those Bishops and Religious who side with those who oppose the teachings of the Church.  And let us grow in our love and fidelity to Christ and His Church…peace and God’s blessings upon us all….

Many institutions in this country are CINO (Catholic In Name Only) and have been for years.  Georgetown is one such institution.  The Catholic church needs to make a stand and stop supporting institutions that do not follow Catholic teachings and beliefs.

  • As long as Georgetown does not confer any awards or honors on Sebelius, they are within their legal rights and are not acting in explicit defiance of the Church.  That being said, I would seriously question the intent of the invitation in either prudence or charity.

The fact that Georgetown does not appear to be conferring any honor or award makes the issue much “cleaner” than what happened at Notre Dame.  There, when confronted with the illegality of giving an award to Obama, Fr. Jenkins diverted attention to the fact that he was free to invite anyone he chose — true … but it was not an issue of academic freedom to grant an honorary degree, as he otherwise equivocated, but of open disobedience.

This might make protests against Georgetown’s action more effective.  First, ND got a LOT of bad press when it refused to drop charges, even though the South Bend public prosecutor continually asked them to.  Second, Jenkins announced he was “betrayed” (and, no doubt, completely surprised, uh huh) by the HHS mandate — so someone should reach out to him and ask him his thoughts on the invitation, if you don’t mind silence.  Third, a law allowing abortion is different from a law requiring active participation in contraception, sterilization, etc., because it doesn’t force you to have an abortion, but the HHS mandate forces you to pay for immoral acts.  Abortion is evil, but it’s someone else’s evil.  The HHS mandate is both evil and tyrannical because it makes you complicit.

Frankly, the only way out is to get rid of the Welfare State that “forces” people to accept anything from the government, and push for something like capital homesteading that will take power away from government and return it to the people.  No more welfare blackmail!

  • Jebcissell

AMEN!!!!  There is no such thing as abortion “rights” !!!!!!

  • livethegoldenrule

It was her administration while governor in Kansas, that shredded evidence that resulted in the dismissal of criminal charges against Planned Parenthood.

Why doesn’t the people who recommended and secured her realize that it is reinforcing her belief that she is doing a good thing, rather than helping her realize the promotion of killing the unborn is death to the soul?  Will she standing at general judgement accusing them of not helping her see the truth?

  • Desertwatch333

Actually, Kathleen Sebelius knows that what she is doing is evil – she was told by her Bishop not to present herself for Holy Communion until she has made a good confession and has publicly recanted her pro abortion position.  She and Nancy Pelosi are so aggressive in advocating for the killing of unborn human babies that they seem to be shriveling up…the evil eating them from the inside…God will not be mocked!!!  We need to pray hard…not only for these pro=abortion ‘Catholics’ but also for the Bishops who affirm them in their sin by permitting them to consider themselves Catholics in good standing so they can receive the Eucharist.  How has it come to be that millions and millions of preborn human babies can be killed and humanity is not outraged and urging that the killing be stopped?!

  • God bless all lukewarm Catholics especially those involved in politics.  May they realize the truth of the Catholic Church and stop hindering the Church that Jesus established.  God bless all who fight for religious freedom for our country.  May they be blessed in this life and the next!

  • Debbie

Georgetown lacks credibility as a Catholic school – they were in the news a while back because a law student (Fluke) was so upset that there was no insurance coverage for birth control…I guess no birth control but OK to have a pro-abort as a commencement speaker

  • Unless Georgetown and other colleges that refer to themselves as Catholic schools are made to suffer the consequences of their actions, then nothing will change.  Remove the “Catholic” label from these schools and do so officially.  They are secular for all intents and purposes and have no relation whatsoever to a “Catholic” school.

  • livethegoldenrule

I guess I am an optimist, if they REALLY knew what they were doing…

I agree, that priests have a responsibility for our souls, and it is also a serious sin to receive Jesus in the Eucharist in the state of mortal sin, and those who are promoting abortion should be told not to receive.

What I don’t understand is how people can call themselves Catholic, but be pro-abortion?  (but I know they rationalize that they can go by their conscience and decide…).

So many are fed by sound bites,  “its a woman’s body/choice” etc. and don’t consider the loss of life by abortion. Satan packages evil as good…  We need to resist feeling fear, overwhelm, discouragement, or helplessness, and speak the truth of the right to life.

We need to fast and pray, pray, pray.

    God bless!

Once again, as has happened repeatedly over the past several decades, Georgetown University brazenly undermines the Catholic Faith.  The Jesuits that run that university are so steeped in the twisted ideology they’ve adopted that they’ve in effect invented their own religion.

As far as fostering the Catholic educational tradition that Cardinal Newman promoted, Georgetown is sadly beyond repair.  It has only served to taint and distort Catholic teaching.

  • ck

There has already been a great example made at Mercy College
which can be applied at Georgetown University as well.  So no excuses if she is allowed to speak.

“On Friday, State Representative Democrat Bob Hagan’s
reported pro-abortion rights stand led the Youngstown campus of Mercy College
of Ohio to rescind its invitation for him to speak at the school’s commencement
ceremony on Tuesday at the public urging of Bishop George Murry, SJ.”

  • Dmscmon

I  was raised a catholic, but am not a practicing catholic, but to have this woman speak at an University that professes this faith is terrible…she is only there to support Obama…the person responsible for many troubles going on these days…Shame on you Georgetown….
