Abstinence-Only Education Offers Best Protection Against STDs

(AgapePress) – A pro-family advocate says it is hypocritical for “progressive” groups to accuse the government of censoring sex education by funding abstinence-only education.

Heather Cirmo, associate director of media for the Family Research Council, says this accusation is the height of hypocrisy. She says these very same groups refuse to tell the truth about condoms’ ineffectiveness in protecting against the most prevalent sexually-transmitted disease of all — the human papillomavirus, or HPV — which affects approximately 24 million Americans each year and causes 99% of the cases of cervical cancer in the U.S.

“It’s no mere coincidence that after over thirty years of so-called ’safe-sex’ education, our nation is suffering from an STD epidemic,” Cirmo says. “Abstinence-only education is not damaging our youth. Condom tossing is. We need to teach kids that saving sex for marriage is not only the healthiest and most moral option, but the most sexually satisfying one as well. When will groups like SIECUS communicate this to teens?”

SIECUS stands for the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the U.S., which she calls a “condom-tossing” organization which opposes congressional reauthorization of federal funding for abstinence-only education.

Cirmo is the author of a policy paper on HPV entitled, “The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Epidemic: Condoms Don't Work.”
