Abortion Misinformation a Challenge for Pro-Life Advocates

CHARLOTTE, NC (AgapePress) – One of the challenges faced by pro-life advocates is addressing the misinformation campaign waged by the pro-abortion side, which has been adopted by the mainstream media.

Pro-life advocates gathered in Charlotte, North Carolina, last weekend for the 29th Annual National Right to Life Convention. One of the main goals of this convention was to help pro-life citizens get the message out that most of what they hear about abortion from the mainstream media is not true.

National Right to Life spokeswoman Olivia Ganns says for a long time, there has been such a misinformation campaign waged about how valuable abortion is to women and how it is a positive experience to women's lives, that the mainstream media has come to believe its own rhetoric.

“The other reality is that we are now actually quite frankly facing a generation where … many of the younger women in the media … have themselves actually been through the abortion experience,” Ganns says. “In my experience, I've actually heard some of them acknowledge that their intimate knowledge of abortion is a personal one and their feelings about the issue are personal.”

“So the misinformation campaign of pro-abortion providers, combined with the 'generation reality check' that we're dealing with now … actually acerbates the situation to keep an authentic, just, fair, honest, and balanced presentation … from coming forward.”

Given the leftward slant of the media, Ganns says it is critically important for people to be as well educated as they can. She says articulating the truth about abortion to those who do not know is a key to changing the public's perception about abortion.

Police were on hand over the weekend, but there were no problems as pro-abortion demonstrators picketed outside the convention in downtown Charlotte — even as they were confronted by pro-life supporters. A small but vocal group of pro-abortion demonstrators lined the street in front of the hotel, waving signs and chanting. The protesters carried signs that read “Keep Abortion Legal” and some carried the logo of the National Organization for Women. The demonstrators were few in number early each day, but by nightfall grew to about 50.
