Homily of the Day

Both readings today speak of the coming of the God-made-man. In the first reading Yahweh gives a sign to Ahaz, “The Virgin is with child and bears a son and calls him Immanuel.” In the Gospel reading, the Angel Gabriel tells the maiden Mary, “You shall conceive and bear a son and you shall call him Jesus. He will be great and shall rightly be called Son of the Most High..”

The incarnation of the Son of God is an unimaginable show of God’s immense love for us. Mary’s generous acceptance of God’s invitation to her is a model for all of us of obedience and love of God, “I am the handmaid of the Lord, let it be done to me as you have said.”

St. Louis Mary de Montfort wrote, “Mary’s strongest inclination is to unite us to Jesus, and her Son’s strongest wish is that we come to him through his Blessed Mother.”
