Your Contribution to China’s 1-Child Policy (even if you didn’t know it)

green Chinese maskTwo weeks ago, the US State Department ranked China as one of the worst countries in the world for sex-trafficking, giving the one-child policy as the root cause.

This analysis is spot on. It is because of the one-child policy that Chinese parents are forced to artificially limit their childbearing. Many choose to have boys over girls. China is currently short more than 37,000,000 women as female infanticide, sex-selective abortion, and neglect have ripped through the female population.

This is the primary reason why China has become the number one destination for sex traffickers. This is also why the US President, Barack Obama, should impose sanctions on China, as the sex trafficking law allows him to do.

But here’s why he won’t:

  • The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) spent $4,861,000 in China last year for “population dynamics programs,” “family planning,” and other population control programs.
  • The United States gave $30,200,000 to the UNFPA last year.

In other words, the U.S. is funding China’s one-child policy, which is the root cause of China’s sex trafficking problem.

In years’ past, such contributions were withheld from the UNFPA.  The President has the authority to stop funding “any organization or program which, as determined by the President of the United States, supports or participates in the management of a program of coercive abortion or involuntary sterilization.”

The first iteration of this law, known as the Kemp-Kasten Amendment, was enacted in 1985, and used by President Reagan to cut funding to the UNFPA. Bush Senior continued to withhold funding, but Clinton then resumed it during his terms in office. Bush Junior followed in his father’s footsteps, but Obama turned on the funding spigot again in 2009.

Proven Abusive

The UNFPA is not a positive force in China. It neither provides health care, nor lobbies to end the one-child policy.  Instead, it supports the policies in various ways.

Over the past two decades, Population Research Institute has repeatedly sent teams of investigators into China. We have thoroughly investigated UNFPA “model family planning counties”, and found that local UNFPA representatives are working hand-in-hand with the Chinese government. If anything, forced sterilizations and forced abortions were more prevalent in the UNFPA’s so-called “model counties” than in the rest of China.

The U.S. should permanently stop funding the United Nations Population Fund, and should work for its abolition. The world no longer needs, if it ever did, an international population control agency.

And President Obama should, in the strongest terms, condemn a policy which has led to the killing of tens of millions of girls, and the enslavement of millions of women.

But don’t hold your breath.
