Yes, Gabriella, Abortion Does Kill Babies

We are a pro-life family, but we rarely discuss it at the dinner table.  Our little ones are not told what the grisly procedure of an abortion is or know what the word means for that matter. When five-year-old Gabriella came home from her kindergarten class and happily stated she voted for Obama it was too much for her eleven-year-old brother to keep silent!  He sat his sister down and said, “Obama is for abortions and abortions kill babies.”

This was unbeknownst to me until about five months later as Gabriella and I sat down on the couch to watch the 700 Club together.  President Obama appeared on the stage discussing a subject concerning the Moslems in a different country.   I don’t remember quite what it was all about, but I will never forget the conversation that played out shortly after.

Gabriella spoke up and said, “Mom, Patrick says that Obama kills babies. “  Hesitant to answer as I searched for the right words, I eventually said, “Well Gabriella, Obama doesn’t actually kill babies, he believes that people should be allowed to end the life of their baby when the baby is in the womb.  Do you remember when your brother Peter was in the womb?”  I received a silent  nod.  “Well, Peter died naturally and we buried him in our garden.  President Obama feels that you can end that baby’s life yourself if you want to.”

The look on her face was obviously very confused, but then she said, “What does he think it is, a creature? “   I answered, “I am not sure what he believes it is Gabriella.”    She in turn said, “They have eyes like us, a nose like us and ears.  Mom, if he thought it wasn’t a baby, why did he let his own children live?”

The wisdom of a child surpasses many.  If President Obama did not believe his wife was carrying a baby, he would have gone to the doctor and gotten rid of that creature inside of his wife’s womb according to newly six-year-old Gabriella.  It made no sense to her.  He was not living up to his beliefs and all respect for him vanished from her little mind that carried more wisdom than most in the world. “I should have never voted for him” Gabriella said quietly as she slowly got off the couch.

Gabriella, we have much to learn from you.  I am sorry to have to tell you; but yes, Gabriella, abortion does kill babies.

I shall definitely remember this sagely question of Gabriella’s the next time I need to argue against abortion – “Why did you let your own children live?”

I have a little 3 year old friend whose name is Joshua. He was at my apartment one day & asked me why people killed babies. I did not know what to say & said no they don’t. Later that day I told his Mom what he had asked & the father said to me, “did you tell him about abortion” & I said of course not. The mother thought it was because he had seen the prince of Egypt & she had explained how Moses was saved from being killed. So i asked him why he had asked me that question & he had seen my rosary with the little fetuses in it & thought they were real babies—-his mom said no, they are only pictures of babies. I told his Mom he was on his way to being a pro-life activist & she replied “Just like his Dad”

I have a couple of things in common with Gabriella, a little mind and no respect for Obama.

i am trying to appropriately teach my children about abortion, including the political aspects of it.
on the one hand i don’t want to frighten them to much and on the other hand i don’t want it to be matter of fact.
i hope making them aware of it will help innocculate them from some of the foolishness of the world.
it is also difficult because i want to teach them respect for authorities such as the president…
i recall noting multiple passages in the old testament in which God directed the isrealites to teach there shildren about the deadly dangers He had delivered them from.
