Rocky Balboa returns to the faith

Mark Shea alerts us to this item from Catholic News Service about Sylvester Stallone's return to the Catholic faith. Not only is Sly publicly professing his devotion to Christ and his Church, but he's incorporated religious references into his new film Rocky Balboa. Furthermore, in the upcoming Rambo sequel, the atheist Rambo is converted by a group of Christian missionaries!

This news is an important reminder to pray for all people in the public eye. The temptations that come with fame and wealth are often greater than we common folk would like to contemplate.

I used to believe, when younger, that instances like this were not important, simply because I didn’t pay attention to them. Now–especially since having children–I have come to realize exactly how important these cinematic instances are, especially with beloved cinema icons like Rocky & Rambo. I am personally very happy for Stallone, & wish him many blessings upon his return home. I am also happy for his creations, in the hope that they will touch others. Even someone as wordly wise as GK Chesterton use to say, only half jokingly, that he was converted by his own creation, the seemingly-uninteresting Father Brown.

Of Stallone and others who have God’s graces bring them back to Him in His Church, we can only celebrate. They are in the public eye and have such opportunity to witness. Stallone seems to be making the most of his opportunity.

But, michael42, of this: “. . . someone as wordly wise as GK Chesterton . . .” Remarkably fortuitous slip or canny recognition?

I remain your obedient servant, but God’s first,
