You seem unclear about my meaning & I'm unclear about what you're unclear about. If you are somehow comparing me to the self righteous pharisee, I direct you to my pointing out Prov. 24: 17 and how I stressed that praying for others to know Jesus' liberating Truth is the Godly posture when dealing with narcissism. [ I would add that I hold to the lesson taught in the parable about those starting early in the day getting the same pay as those who started late (Mt 20: 1-16) which urges us to think of our faith as a reward in itself rather than payment for being good.] Are you questioning my effervescent gratitude for having Jesus' Church as a trustworthy source of empirically sound & liberating Truth ? I'm reminded of the apostles who went out from the city rejoicing after being flogged for preaching (Acts 5: 41). You reference "Audacity of Hope" (is that Obama's book ? ) about transformation through sufferring. No one can argue sufferring as part of the christian journey but Jn. 16: 33 suggests we keep a VICTORY OVER SUFFERRING perspective rather than a sufferring for it's own sake approach. God Bless

Wow, very timely, as I had just been reading up on Romanticism in the arts, and it deals with (or more correctly, pointedly doesn't deal with) all these questions.

"...man today is in flight from thinking. This flight from-thought is the ground of thoughtlessness. But part of this flight is that man will neither see nor admit it. Man today will even flatly deny this flight from thinking." - Martin Heidegger

Chaco- Hmmmmm. Am I truly understanding that your post was tongue-in-cheek, "I get it...and a few others get it...praise God for fellow Truth embracers"...and your verse in Proverbs, "...superiority revelling in others being deceived...", or was this meant to be a lesson on what not to do - judge others? That's what the Pharisee said about the Publican - "I thank God i'm not like that miserable tax-collector back there..."
That said, i do "get" what this writer meant in his column, but i think it was to describe this perverse "me-first" generation, not necessarily identified individuals - even though the rule may apply. It's like the old reversal of "I'm okay, you're okay" to "I'm okay, you're not okay."
My prayer would always be to ask our Lord to help me to "get-it" and pray for another before i attempt to take the splinter out of his/her eye. The "Audacity of Hope" [TSW,10/2/12], demands that we never lose our faith in the radical transformation of ourselves and others, through the Cross of suffering.

BINGO ! Our recent Popes have been RIGHT ON in warning us about Relativism(no Truth except what is RELATIVE to one's own personal experiences & appetites) as the greatest enemy of our times. I am effervescent with gratitude that I get it & at least a few others get it as well. Sweet Jesus, Truth truly does set us free ! I feel like I can live more in a couple minutes than the deceived can live in years of "Lemming confusion". Praise God for fellow Truth embracers ! Even if we seem outnumbered, how many freinds can one really have a deep down bonding & lasting relationship with ? I am truly RICH. Note; Proverbs 24: 17 warns against feelings of superiority from revelling in others being deceived. Longing / praying for them to experience The Risen Lord is the way to know that we possess His presence. Thanks Old Buddy- Old Pal !

Oh how true!
It would seem that most people have forgotten -- if they ever knew -- how to think. Collectively, we go with the crowd, "with the flow", and fail to realize we are about to step off a cliff. Once we lose sight of an objective and knowable truth, and settle instead for the subjective "whatever I think is true must be true", chaos ultimately results. We desperately need to reorient ourselves to true north -- Jesus Christ.
