This is part of the prayer of Jesus for his disciples and also for us. Here he is praying for unity in faith. The words used by the evangelist are very moving, begging the Father that his disciples as well as we, will believe in Jesus as God, and sent by the Father to us. He also foresaw that there will be many who will be receiving the apostles’ preaching, yet will they believe or will they just ignore the invitation. For us who are reading and rereading this prayer of Jesus, how do we understand and live it? Indeed, Jesus has reason to repeat his pleading to the Father so that we will believe. As believers are we totally in union with the teachings of Jesus as handed down to us by the written word and the traditions of our faith? Let us thank Jesus and ponder over his prayer for all of us. We pray that we may be one in Jesus and be steadfast in our faith in spite of so many allurements of the world.
