Election Reflection for Warrior Catholics

Fr. John Hollowell

I became a priest because God was calling me to it.  I can promise you…it wasn’t my idea.  At the time of my calling, and indeed throughout seminary, I imagined being a priest in a medium-sized parish, baptizing babies, marrying couples, growing old, and eventually dying and going to heaven.

Perhaps to keep me from running away, I was spared viewing the type of priesthood that God has since let me know that I would ACTUALLY be called to.  Practically from my ordination day, I’ve felt (and been shown) that the priesthood God is raising up in me and my fellow priests of my generation is a priesthood of warriors who will fight and die for the faith.  I’ve also realized, from pretty early on, that this generation of warrior priests would be, in an earthly sense, too late.  It is tempting to ask, “why didn’t God raise up priests like this 40 years ago?”  I don’t have the answer, but I know enough to know that God has his reasons.

It began with homilies…when people would come up and complain about them I would sit there and have a kind of out of body experience and think “I should be really affected by this, but I could care less that this person is yelling at me right now.”  Of course it continued with videos spreading out across the country to friends and foes alike…I remember thinking “I should be really sad that people are attacking me” but I remember in those moments being overcome with the urge to chuckle at how little it actually DID affect me.  You, as a faithful Catholic, have likely had similar experiences…and that is God working in you and preparing you for what is to come as well.

And so it begins…

I’m a bigger fan of authentic peace, but I’d rather have a battle than surface level passive-aggressive “peace” that simply masks evil.  I’ve seen, in 3.5 years of priesthood, that perhaps a battle would do us all some good.  If the stats hold true, 40% of Catholics who go to Mass every week just stood in open defiance of their bishops and the Church in voting in the affirmative for a candidate who:

1) supports redefining marriage
2) supports forcing the Church to do something it will never do
3) is for abortion through all 9+ months of pregnancy
4) is for the government helping people procure abortions if they can’t afford one
5) provides for the destruction of human embryos for research

Please draw me up a candidate who could more completely embody the opposite of Catholicism.

The Catholic Church in the United States is a cage that needs rattling, and the coming battle will provide just such a shake-up.  The days of bishops and cardinals yucking it up with anti-Catholic politicians will soon be at an end.  The days of bishops and cardinals wagging fingers at anti-Catholic “catholic” politicians and telling them not to cross this line again…and then redrawing the line further back…those days will soon be at an end.

And I guess what I’m saying is that there is a lazy part of me that prefers comfort and wishes it never had to come to blows like this surely will…but there is another part of me that realizes God is doing something in the hearts of faithful priests and Catholics and I think we’re on the edge of something that will be unlike anything we’ve seen in our lifetimes.

“Do not think that I have come to bring peace.  I’ve come not to bring peace but rather the sword.”  – Jesus Christ.  He brings the sword because the sword wakes people up, and it is better to be awakened at the last moment so that one can still repent than it is for a person to gain the whole world but lose his soul.

………….

My favorite scene from the Dark Knight Rises movie is at the beginning.  Commissioner Jim Gordon is at a podium and a couple of fatcat politicians are talking about him from afar:
fatcat 1: “He’s going to have plenty of free time, the mayor’s dumping him.”
fatcat 2: “But he’s a hero!”
fatcat 1: “He’s a wartime hero, this is peacetime.”

“Wartime Heroes” always seem clumsy, brutish, unpolished, unrefined etc. when things are going swell and dandy and everyone has enough food to eat.  Wartime heroes don’t know how to make a martini and don’t have a room full of stogies, but when peacetime evaporates, no one gives a dang about priests and bishops and leaders that are “refined” and “dignified”, people turn to warrior priests and warrior Catholics…they will turn to us soon…and we will be ready.

  • Seeker of Truth

Thank you so much for that, Father. I think you’ve given me insight as to why I felt so surprisingly sad after the election results were in and all throughout today. Perhaps we ARE being prepared for battle. Maybe we have taken our freedom of faith for granted for too long and now we must wholeheartedly fight for it. I’m ready to be a warrior for our Lord, for human life, for Truth. I pray that God really will bless America.

  • waffle

“You must fight energetically, since you know very well what great wounds the undefiled Spouse of Christ Jesus has suffered, and how vigorous is the destructive attack of Her enemies.” -His Holiness, Venerable Pope Pius IX

  • waffle

‘Taken for granted’ is it. In the West we think we can ‘play’ with athiesm/communism, eastern anti-thiesms, eastern polytheisms, western esotericisms, extreme and historically dissonant feminisms (read, if nothing else Susan B Anthony on abortion), and every sort of hyper-individualism, brought to us by the determined anti-priests of anti-Christ. Only those who seek, ask and knock for the sake of salvation end up seeking the Grace of the Bride of Christ.

  • Coming Back

I grew up in the Catholic Church – left it and for the past 7 years have been an Episcopalian – am now “swimming the Tiber” to return home precisely because that RCC stands up against the surrounding, crushing culture of death, as Fr. Hollowell says here. Thank you, Father, for providing yet more confirmation of my decision to stand with a church that isn’t afraid to speak the truth.

Father, we desperately need Warrior Priests! It is disgusting to hear Joe Biden say he is a Catholic but can’t impose his pro-life feelings on others or Nancy Pelosi re-writing the Catechism about the churches stance on abortion. I have prayed that some bishop or cardinal would call them out publicly and say NO these people are NOT living the Catholic faith. The silence is so depressing…I don’t want our Church to be like others who just go with the flow, whatever the culture says is oK, Mediocre Catholics are as bad as these politicians! It is time to rise up and speak out!

  • Glenn

Fr. John – thank you so much for the article. We the faithful need leaders who aren’t afraid to speak the truth. We will follow you and fight with you. My God continue to bless you and your ministry. I’ll never forget those first words of JPII when he ascended to the Chair of Peter, “Be not afraid!”

  • Melisa

You have echoed all I have been believing and have felt. I knew we would need to be battle ready, I knew I was doing something right by placing my trust on the warrior priests I know- who are unafraid of the truth. I knew the night of the elections, we would need to prepare ourselves for battle God has had enough of being mocked and our punishment and purification lies ahead of us! God Bless you Father, Great Article!!

  • Elizabeth Schmeidler

Amen! Amen! Amen! Oh my goodness! I can hardly believe my eyes!! Despite the sorrowful tears they have cried over this disastrous election and the situation you just described about many who call themselves “Catholic”!
I praise God for you! I thank Him for all you are doing and will do in your battle! You can’t imagine how much I needed to hear this today!
God bless you, Father. Know that if you are fighting, I’m fighting with you. Through prayer AND action. Every time we read the passage about those who shouted Barabbas’ name, I realize that it’s happening all over…every day that our people choose death over life. Darkness over Light.
Know that I am fighting with you. God bless you. God bless you. God bless you. You have made my heart sing this morning!

  • Pinago

Awesome. We need more Warrior Catholic Priests AND Parishioners. We need priests who will have the guts to deny Holy Communion to parishioners who voted for Obama. This is a spiritual sword that will send message loud and clear; voting for the culture of death is not in-line with God’s Will and therefore you cannot be in union with the Body of Christ. And, we ALL should be going to confession EVERY weekend before Mass…

  • NualaB

Thank you, Father. I’d be interested to know your opinion about what event/s will further necessitate our militancy. Perhaps it will be that “soon” will never come: duplicitous bishops and clerics will continue to mislead their passive flocks, “Catholic” institutions will continue to betray the Faith by their scholarship and policies, and the unholy but lucrative and longstanding alliance with the Democratic Party will prevail, despite on-camera pleas in defense of orthodoxy. Maybe it is just our role to be the shrill and unrefined has-beens, and never quite cut a heroic figure in this life.

  • Catholic Mom

Thanks, Father. I just spent an hour on the phone last night with my 25-year-old son who worked tirelessly to educate Catholics on this election. He said he felt he wasn’t having any effect on the world. In a Bible study I learned last week that God only calls us to do the “what,” and He takes care of the ‘how.” Right now, I think many of us are trying to figure out “what to do,” and when it is revealed to us, God will take care of “how” it gets done. Happily, my son can count five friends from college and grad school who have entered the priesthood in the last few years. From what I know of these men, they are of the warrior priest stock. God is raising up an army. Thanks for such a motivating post! Onward Christian Soldiers!

  • Jared

There is no bigger supporter of the welfare state and thus welfare
state politicians and the Dem party than the Catholic bishops. They love
this destructive system based on envy, jealousy, covetousness,
bitterness and theft. They promote this all the time and then they say
oh, no, don’t vote for pro-abortion candidates. Good luck with that.
Choosing which sins are ok and which are not is kinda tricky business.

  • SG

As a mom of 7 kids, 13 years and under, I have to tell you I needed to read this. I want all my kids to be warriors for Christ. It helps to have living warriors to emulate especially in this sick culture though. My husband and I do our best in that area but it would be awesome to have some warrior priests and religious for them to see too. I pray there will be many more like you, Father! God bless you!

Father, terrific post. It’s an extraordinary time yet it’s so difficult to see the big picture when you’re standing in the middle of it. I sense we’re on the brink of a war, I think you’ve accurately described the situation, our mission seems clear, communication to the trenches will indeed be key––it’s just that the execution has me stumped. I’m not quite sure how I would draw up a battle plan! And as a former Marine fighter pilot, I know you can’t win with a lousy plan no matter how righteous the cause (but you can sure as hell win with a great plan in spite of its diabolical undercurrent – see Obama et al.). It also will be interesting to see what sort of leaders step forward. A Churchillian opportunity in my view.

  • Militant Pro-Lifers

Thank you, Padre, for the column. The Popes have recently been pretty clear that this is the laity’s fight, but it’s good to have some holy priests in the trenches with us. We want you know, though, that we’ve got your back. Ora pro nobis.

  • Poppiexno

Courageous article, Father. The saddest aspect of the election is the number of “Catholics” who voted for Obama. I am also saddened by the lack of forcible leadership by the bishops. I have written numerous times on this site how I remember that Archbishop Joseph Francis Rummel of New Orleans excommunicated two people for openly opposing his plan to racially integrate Catholic grammar schools. Yet Nancy Pelosi, Joe Biden, Mario Cuomo and other so-called “Catholic” politicians such as Ted Kennedy who openly support abortion get a free pass. Scandalous!

  • Lynda

Thank you Father for this article and being God’s warrior. Christ says if we follow Him we will be persecuted even as He was, and so we are blessed to be. Peter comes to mind who said, “We ought to obey God rather than men.” and so he was beaten but Peter rejoiced in being persecuted “because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name.” In times like these I think of the prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel, I think I want to pray that every day.

  • yblegen

Thank you. My family and I are ready for the battle!!!

  • John

Thanks be to God for raising up priests like this! May He grant us all the courage to follow Him where we must in these days.

“We need priests who will have the guts to deny Holy Communion to parishioners who voted for Obama.”

I can see it now: px the communion line-

[Priest ] “On pain of excommunication, did you vote for Obama?

[Communicant, with head bowed], “Yes Father”

[Priest], “Leave Satan – a pox on you!”

Good way to “Florida-ize” our communion lines. And, while i agree with the writer and many of the respondants, we still must guard aganst discarding charity, while embracing our dissent, even if it means facing the lions dens.

  • monica

Thank you father. I am ready for the fight. But as somebody wrote, changes could
continue to happen for the worse, little by little until some day we will wake up and ask ourselves how come we did not do anything to stop it?

  • Pinago

If in sin, we should not be receiving Holy Communion until we’ve gone to confession and completed our penance.

  • Living_by_Grace

Thank you – we support you, Father! There are many priests with our beloved Archbishop Nienstedt in the Archdiocese of St. Paul/Minneapolis and elsewhere who are not afraid to speak the Truth. In the Madison, WI diocese, Fr. Rick Heilman has put an organization together you would appreciate: http://www.knightsofdivinemercy.com/ I learned of Fr. Heilman on “The Inner Life” on Relevant Radio. (relevantradio.com)

I join you in this battle, my son, too. He is at Saint Paul Seminary (a faithful Catholic house of formation, Praise God!). Please pray for all seminarians, priests, bishops and our Pope Benedict XVI, and all of us as we live in the world as Faithful Catholics, that we will be witness in love to our not-so-faithful brethren to embrace the Truth and transform our culture to one of Life.

  • http://twitter.com/RhoslynThomas Rhos

I like to listen to your homilies on Youtube Fr., and you have done another great job here! I think you are absolutely right that in their time of need, Catholics will turn to priests like yourself. Well done on calling out those Catholics who voted for Obama too! This needs to be done…

  • Susy

HOLY WAR!, Your right Father, it would do us some good! Thanks for your fervor and I’m with you 100%.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Regina-Weiner/100001179896625 Regina Weiner

What no one has stopped to consider is that battle is coming irrespective of which candidate won. One candidate was for unrestricted abortion, one was for abortion “just a little.” Does anyone think that we are not marked for destruction when we can just hold our breath and be “just a little” evil. Abraham Lincoln said it best: “I tremble for my country when I consider that God is just.”

  • mk.c

So, Pinago, are you writing more commandments to the two great commandments, “1-Love God with your whole heart…2-Love your neighbor…,” and 3-Do not vote for Obama for it is a mortal sin to vote for Obama? Thank you, but I’ll keep my Bible as it is and i will not define others by your additions. It is over 1600 years too late for the Council to set what would be included in Sacred Scripture. And, if the Pope declared that no Catholic can vote for Obama, then the Church would lose it’s tax-free status…then 30% (or more) of your tythes and offerings would go to Obama’s causes (Oh, perish the thought).
As i said before, don’t abandon charity in your political zeal. I commend you for your faith in Catholic causes, and you surely must be a very committed Christian, but Jesus asked us to love and do good to our (perceived) enemies, not hate them. We can only work to eradicate evil in our world if we stick together, not by pointing fingers. We lead by example, not by ranting.

  • http://JamesTPereira.com/ James T Pereira

Fr. John, I love the phrase “Warrior Priests”, the antithesis of predator priests and slothful priests who have scuttled the ship.

  • Patty

I recently watched For Greater Glory. Not knowing the story before hand I was very surprised at the ending. Spoiler alert if you haven’t watched the movie don’t read the rest of my comment but do go rent the movie and watch it! In the end the people who took up arms including at least one Priest, did not turn the tide. Diplomacy won the day and the hero was a boy who did not bear arms.

  • Father John Hollowell

I assumed it was clear, but perhaps that’s what I get for assuming; the “battle” is simply a metaphor, at least from the Catholic side of things, although I have no doubt a literal battle will be brought upon us I am not saying we should fight back with violence but should look to the cross. Battle = a metaphor for us moving forward.

  • Pinago

Oh, I hit a nerve. Someone voted for Obama…

  • Cathy G.

Horray! Bravo! And thank God our mamma wears combat boots…(for crushing the heads of snakes and such!)

  • Cass

Father, thank you for this post. We are in the thick of the battle and we need good COURAGEOUS priests leading the way. Everyone wants to eat at the banquet table but no one wants to arrive at the banquet via the cross. We must suffer with Christ.

These problems did not come overnight. This happened 45 years ago when many priests and laypeople rejected Humanae Vitae and rebelled against the Church, and our schools, Churches and priests failed to educate their flock in the teachings of the Church and to teach us to THINK.. Apathy and lukewarmness entered into the Church and the devil got a mighty foothold. The face of the Catholic church today is a bunch of spoiled little children in adult bodies running around doing whatever they want to do, and their “fathers”, our priests, sat back and did nothing. This past election as I listened to our pastor read letter after letter from our Bishop stating the seriousness of putting one’s soul in jeopardy if they voted for a candidate who is not pro-life, I felt like standing up and yelling, “you might as well use that letter to wipe up the floor!” Most of the Catholics in the pews had a “you can’t tell me what to do attitude” where I live. But in their defense, you can’t suddenly be throwing this “obedience to the Church stuff at them” when they have been living in disobendice for years! Not only that, I haven’t heard the word hell spoken in one homily since I have been a member of our parish for 5 years now. Wake up priests. Stop being afraid of offending someone and start forming us. Holy cow, my parents were not disciplinarians and how I wish they would have “offended” me over and over. It would have saved me a lot of heartache.

In two parishes in the city where I live, two different priests at separate Masses on the Sunday following All Saints Day, stood up and said, “This past week was All Saints Day, a Holy Day of Obligation. If you missed Mass without a good reason, you are in a state of mortal sin and may not come to Holy Communion. You need to go to confession before coming back to Communion.” YES!! FINALLY!! Courage.
Father, I will pray for you and all priests and Catholics and our conversions as we enter into this battle. Humility and obedience to Holy Mother Church must be our weapons..

  • Paul Wilkinson

Finally, FINALLY, F-I-N-A-L-L-Y, did I say FINALLY yet? A priest that is not afraid to stand up for our Catholic beliefs and shout it from the rooftops! Thank you Father. We lay people are ready to put up the good fight, but get discouraged when our leaders (priests, bishops & cardinals) don’t even give the impression that they fully believe in the teachings of the Catholic church. Absolute truth is absolute truth whether it was handed down 2000+ years ago or discussed today. I’m all for smaller parishes if it means weeding out those who are not willing to follow the Church teachings because it means they can’t “enjoy” life as much as they’d like. That also goes for weeding out priests who do not ascribe to the Church our Lord passed on to St. Peter. Let’s dig in and fight the good fight!

  • Mary-Lynn Ott

Thank you…We have priests like you here in Modesto, CA. and sadly not everyone understands the truth or the battle. But as a family we love and support them. Praise God for you!!!!!!!!

  • mk.c

Not me, Pinago – did you? But I may perhaps have hit yours in calling you on judging others, your seeming lack of charity, and puting yourself in authority over what is sin and what is not. While I pray for our country, I’ll pray for you and our Church as well.
God never promised to take our suffering away (or steer elections the way we would like) – perhaps he wants to test our mettle. The first Christians face death and torture – many of them died, but it did not destroy the message or the Church. Take courage – and live to fight another day.

  • mk.c

Thanks, Father. I understod the metaphor that the “battle” is with “principalities and powers” – not the sword. We don’t always win, but we must keep trying.

  • J.A.

This does not entail PHYSICAL violence, does it?

  • fr Michael

Father, I know the call myself. I am a priest in far east siberia now for 18 years. I find everyday the call to love the cross and the readiness to suffer for Christ and His church. It is not a glamorous life but one just right to see beyond everyday issues to our eternal home. Thanks Father from this Father. I bit older warrior priest who has not and will not give up the battle. And the amazing thing is the battle for truth and life and God always brings peace and joy in ones heart. Fr Michael Shiedls Magadan Russian

  • Fred

Peace on you Padre ! We Catholics that care stand shoulder to shoulder with you in this battle that can not be lost !

  • Dan

The average spiritual temperature of most Catholics is so low that when someone who is healthy enters, everyone thinks he has a fever.

We have, for too long, allowed tepid and lukewarm Catholicism to define what is properly called The Church Militant. Fr. Hollowell is an example of what should be considered “normal” Catholicism. That his excellent remarks are considered “radical” is the best indicator of just how soft our message, leadership and laity have become. Christ wasn’t crucified for feeding the poor, He was murdered for calling mankind to faithful fully alive faith in Him.

  • Susanne

You are a breath of fresh air to a polluted church. I am a recent Midwestern transplant from New England. I can offer a ground-level insight as regards the “Catholic” vote. With very few exceptions, the priests up there are weak-kneed, “Be excellent to each other”, “I’m okay, you’re okay”, “Wink, wink, nudge, nudge…the Vatican is antiquated”, “Let’s not rock the boat” types. Sin is some kind of nebulous, evil force. It isn’t something personal. The greatest evil is being judgmental and intolerant. If I were a lesbian and wanted to attend Mass with my publicly acknowledged lesbian lover, I’d get less derision than if I had the audacity to attend a Novus Ordo Mass wearing a mantilla. There’s lots of hand holding and clapping and stand-up comedian sermons. Everyone feels good when they leave. In my personal experience I can say without equivocation that I have never endured more cruelty and lack of integrity in the outside world as I have in my church. I would like to say that things are different here. I admit that the tone is less militant, but the message is still vacuous. I have 3 teenage sons. They are looking for warriors and are getting court jesters.

  • Pinago

NO, no way. He is the most pro-abortion president ever. A vote for him is a vote for abortion and infanticide. Glad you didn’t vote for him either… so who did?? Wonder…

  • AtheistBarbarian

    DO YOU EVEN LIFT?

  • JC

As religions get more strident we become the thing we hate. What is different about “warrior priests” from “jihad”? You want to fight and die for your faith? Give me a break. You misunderstand the gospel message. And you fundamentally misunderstand the role of the church in American politics. America is a pluralistic society and one in which Catholics are an increasingly small part of the population. Believe what you want. Preach what you want. Tell your flock not to have an abortion. But spare me the “onward Christian soldiers” rhetoric. And do be careful about what you encourage. Use some discernment to see if your words and actions truly reflect the words of Christ.

  • Merry

CM — please thank your son for all of us. He may not see the fruits of his work but his faithfulness shines!

  • Merry

Marcus — thank you for your service and Happy Veteran’s Day (a few days early)!

  • Merry

Cathy — the image of Mary with combat boots made me laugh! I love it! Good is always more powerful than evil. Thanks for your creative reminder!

  • Tom

Wow, a priest for a whole three and half years and you have all the answers and can diss those who have been priests for 40 years. You are a pompous ass. Yes, the Democrats in general have a sad and even cowardly position on abortion, but that is not the only Catholic issue. What about the poor and others who are vulnerable? What about the environment (God’s creation)? What about racism? Immigration? Healthcare? The church has a long history of supporting social justice – something the Republican party doesn’t seem to care about it. Worker’s rights? The economy should support workers, not the other way around. Do Republicans believe that? By the way, my little whitened sepulcher, Jesus was not a Warrior. He was a non-violent rebel.,

  • Tom

    Well said, JC. Hmmm, JC??
