Hebrews 1:3
He reflects the glory of God and bears the very stamp of His nature, upholding the universe by His word of power.
St. Thomas Aquinas remarked long ago that if God wished to destroy the universe He would not have to do anything. He would have to stop doing something. Creation is not a “once upon a time” thing. It is occurring right now. This does not mean that God is busy lighting off new Big Bangs in some other universe as you read this. It means that the quarks, atoms and molecules which compose your body and the computer screen you are looking at (not to mention the kangaroos, distant stars, and hairs in Barbara Streisand’s capacious nose and everything else) are all held in being right this second by the purposeful act of God. If He did not continue to uphold them in being, they would all go away. God’s glory is being displayed right now in every part of the universe by the mere fact that the universe is — now!
