A Higher Standard

Christ came not only to fulfill the Mosaic Law but also to bring it to a new and higher standard. It is the new commandment of love. Love must not be mere words but must be active and genuine. The commandments are not simply impositions or demands.

Christ was the first one who showed what love is. “If God has loved us so much we too should love each other.” (1Jn 4:20) The law is summarized as love of God and love of neighbor. How do we know if we truly love God? It is measured by how much we love and forgive each other.

    Not a higher standard. The two great commandments that Christ gave us only summarize the Ten Commandments. Jesus said that the greatest commandment is to love God with all of our hearts, all of our soul and all of our mind. This is the greatest of the two commandments. Jesus separated love for God from love of neighbor. The first three commandment concern love for God first too. We are also to love others as much as we love ourselves though. Jesus only summarized the existing Ten Commandments into a simpler way of understanding them.
