He was not a combatant in the battle for Attu, but he had plenty of stories to tell us about the hardships of fighting the elements on the islands. Fighting boredom was easier: if the weather allowed and duty allowed, they got a baseball game going. It is sad they got so little recognition over the decades that followed. Uncle Vince died in 1997 at the age of 86. Thanks to Dr. Kengor for remembering these veterans on their day. My uncle was a veteran of the Aleutian Campaign.
