Last January on that black day, the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, I spoke at a pro-life event. There was a crowd of about 300 gathered around our local abortion mill to pray the rosary. It was my first public work for the pro-life cause. Ten days later our house burned. My good friend came to my home that day and helped me package up the wedding china, which had been spared, along with a few other sentimental items. We wanted to outpace any potential looters. During our packing in my water-soaked, smoke-stained, burned out house with all the windows smashed, she said, "You're being tested. You spoke out for life. The evil one is unhappy." It hadn't occurred to me. Several other people made similar comments over the next few days.

After my friend left and I was alone in the house, he-of-zero-significance and I had a chat. I said, "Is this all you got? Coward!"

The whole community rallied around us. It was profoundly life-changing. I am only grateful for the experience and I have a deep appreciation for Michael, who wields the sword, my guardian angel and friend, fierce protector and God's gift to me. My pro-life activites have only intensified since then, including two columns posted on this website. God is good and He protects his faithful ones.

"Be not afraid."
