St. Serapion of Antioch

October 29th, 2009 by Lisa Wheeler Print This Article Print This Article ·

One of the lesser-known Church Fathers, Serapion lived around the latter part of the second century. He was a contemporary of St. Jerome and much admired for his teachings on Scripture. There is not much that remains of his writings, but we know he spoke harshly to the Church in Rhossus regarding their use of the Gospel of St. Peter in the liturgy.

He was ordained a bishop in 190 AD and spent much of his ministry exercising his teaching authority. He addressed the Montanism heresy in an apostolic letter and won many praises among the episcopacy for his strong theological positions. He was considered a leading theologian of the time.

He died in 211 AD and his feast day is celebrated today in the Church calendar.
