There is a devil and demons and they want to take as many of us as they can to hell. The knowledge that this is true causes so much compassion to Love those who are lost, I do not want to see anyone go to hell. God help us to not be deceived.

(you can look up in the catechism by searching demons, devils, exorcism...)

Personally, I think Halloween can be healthy. It's a time for good Catholics to consider death and damnation. We don't do icky costumes at our house, either, but the holiday atmosphere of fear and mischief can be a good thing if it's used as a teaching tool.

“But often men, deceived by the Evil One, have become vain in their reasonings and have exchanged the truth of God for a lie, serving the creature rather than the Creator. Or some there are who, living and dying in this world without God, are exposed to final despair” (LG 16).

That's a great description of narcissistic personality disorder. M. Scott Peck in his book People of the Lie calls it a more direct name--evil. Do a search on it and read about it if you're interested. I've seen indicators in a number of people I've had to deal with, many of them family members.

As far as believing in the devil, a book I read gives the best definition that I have heard. Something to the effect of: "I believe in a mighty, malignant and intelligent power of evil working in the universe. You can call it the devil, or the priciple of evil, or Old Scratch, or any name you like. It's there and all the infidels and heritics in the world can't argue it away, any more than they can argue God away. It's there, and it's working. But I also believe it's going to get the worst of it in the long run."

When my family did celebrate Halloween, Mom insisted that we have decent wholesome(sometimes silly) costumes. I can remember being an angel, a college student and a bunch of grapes. When we started homeschooling, we also started celebrating All Saints Day instead. Sometimes we still carve pumpkins though. Nothing spooky, grusome, or very ugly is allowed on them. (Last year I managed to do Jonah and the whale, and a few years ago I did a crucifix.)

That's why our family has decided to abandon Halloween. I forbade my children to dress as witches, devils, warlocks or anything that reflected the evil of the unseen world. When children dress up as devils and witches it's as if they want to take on the personage of that same thing, a statement of who they fantasize about being. Catholic/Christian children should do no such thing. All Hallow's Eve, which is really what this day stands for is the eve of the celebration of ALL SAINTS Day! "Hallow" means HOLY, as in the Our Father, "Hallowed" be Thy name. Let us as parent s focus on the TRUE feast the church gives us and have the kids disguise themselves as the Saints, making it a learning experience of who they are!

The witches, the "undead", the "monsters" that roam the world looking for candy on Oct. 31, always leave me a little sad. Why would anyone in their right mind want to "celebrate" something so awful. (Don't tell me it's all in "good fun"! Pope Benedict XVI was "good fun"!) But the little devils are the worst because people don't seem to realize that they are being duped. While they are laughing at horns and tails, the real devil comes to them diguised as an "angel of light". Because they haven't been taught to discern between "real" light and "false" light, they take in everything he tells them and swallow it whole. If it makes my heart heavy, what must Jesus' heart suffer?
