Don't you think this works equally well when it's turned upside-down? Who are we sheep more likely to follow: the one who tells us what a great shepherd he is and how he's going to take such good care of us, or the one who simply, quietly does take good care of us? How quick we are to pay attention to--and even glorify--the "clanging cymbal" or the "sounding gong", while we miss the very face/hands/feet of Jesus Who is making sure that we are fed first, or that there's toilet paper in the bathroom! Perhaps James and John weren't the only ones who needed a different point-of-view.
