Trust in Him! He Will Act!

Psalm 37:5

Commit your way to the LORD;
Trust in him, and he will act.

One of the distinct notes sounded in biblical and Catholic teaching is that God is not the abstract conclusion of our theological ruminations, but a real God who actually does things. The counsel to trust God because he will actually do something is shocking to a culture habitually obsessed with “religion as a private affair between the individual and his conscience.” Suppose God isn’t private? Suppose he is not a subjective fantasy but a highly public God who periodically disrupts the course of business and government by impetuously doing things like driving out moneychangers, being crucified, rising from the dead, destroying idols, rebuking nations, casting down the mighty in their arrogance, lifting up the meek and the lowly, and rolling up the sky like a scroll when the whole shebang has served his purpose? It’s worth considering before we build too much on the sand of this seemingly solid and final world. Today, trust in God. He will act.

    Let us not forget that God is indeed a public God. Pray that He gives us the strength to stop this proposed national health care bill that includes government funded abortion. Rejecting this bill does not mean that health care cannot be provided for all needy people. Rather it means that we will not stand for a bill that compromises our faith. Have faith in God. Let Him guide our politicians in making this country united in the cause of Respect for Life. Ask the Holy Spirit to give us wisdom and strength.
