EU the New Soviet Union: Russian Gulag Survivor

A prominent former Soviet dissident says that the European Union is disturbingly similar in its ideological foundations, and its methods, to the Soviet Union. Author and political activist Vladimir Konstantinovich Bukovsky, who spent 12 years in the Russian gulag, is now warning the people of Europe that they are in danger of allowing a new totalitarian superstate to rise.

"It is really puzzling to me," says Bukovsky in the documentary "Britain on the Brink," "that having just buried one monster, the Soviet Union, another remarkably similar one, the European Union, is being built." The same ideology, he said, underpins both systems. "The EU is the old Soviet model, presented in Western guise."

Bukovsky has joined his voice with many who are warning that a small number of leftist oligarchs in Brussels, with their allies in national parliaments, are in the process of creating a new communist-style superstate called "Europe" in which national sovereignty, and democracy, will be a thing of the past.

He warned that the EU is employing an "intellectual gulag known as political correctness" to suppress opposition. "When anyone tries to speak their mind on questions of race or gender, or if their views differ from those approved, they will be ostracised.

"This is the beginning of the gulag. The beginning of your loss of freedom."

With a thin pretence of democratic practice, Bukovsky said, the European Parliament serves the same function as the Supreme Soviet of the former Soviet Union that merely "rubber stamps" decisions made by a small number of unelected leaders.

Bukovsky, who now lives in Britain, was one of the first to expose the use of false psychiatric diagnoses and forced imprisonment in psychiatric hospitals against the Soviets’ political opponents. For opposing the regime, he spent a total of twelve years in prisons, labour camps and was himself a victim of the forced psychiatric treatment and hospital imprisonment used by the regime.

In the Soviet Union, he said, the people were taught that they had to forget their nationalities, ethnic traditions and customs to become a "new historic entity" the "soviet people." The European Union, he said, is following the same pattern of cultural eradication.

"They don’t want you to be British or French. They want you all to be a new historic entity, ‘European’. To suppress all your national feelings and live as a multinational community." One of the "grand purposes" of the Soviet Union, he pointed out, was the destruction of the nation state.

"Brussels intends to absorb nation states so they should cease to exist."

The European Union was formally established by the Treaty of Maastricht in November 1993, growing out of the existing European Economic Community, founded in the 1970s. It has grown to encompass 27 countries, 500 million citizens and a single currency that is used by 16 of its member states. The EU economy generates an estimated 30 percent share of the nominal gross world product.

Bukovsky warns that, despite its appearance of success, like the Soviet Union, the EU has within its anti-democratic principles, the "seeds of its own destruction."

"Unfortunately, when it collapses, and it will, it will leave immense destruction behind and we will be left with huge economic and ethnic problems."

Bukovsky is joining his voice to many who are increasingly warning that the European Union is a radically antidemocratic oligarchy that is becoming a federal superstate.

Phillip Day, head of the British group Campaign for Truth in Europe (CTE), warns in a 2006 documentary that British sovereignty is being systematically dismantled by colluding British politicians. Day warns that the European draft constitution, renamed the Lisbon Treaty, establishes "competence and primacy over member states’ own laws."

CTE holds that Britain’s membership of the European Union (EU) was established illegally and is unconstitutional.

Appearing in the CTE documentary, titled, "The Real Face of the European Union," Ole Krarup, a law professor and Danish Member of the European Parliament, said, "The political aim" of the EU, "is to develop the framework for a real European Union constitution. And in my opinion, this means building up a European federal state."

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Uprising, Bukovsky told a meeting in Brussels that the EU is a "monster" that must be dismantled before it develops into a full fledged totalitarian state. Speaking at the invitation of Fidesz, the Hungarian Civic Forum in 2006, Bukovsky, who accepted nomination as a candidate in the Russian presidential election in 2008, referred to politburo and central committee documents he had allegedly read in 1992 confirming the existence of what he called a "conspiracy" to turn the European Union into a socialist organization.

In those documents, he said, "I came out very clearly that the whole idea of turning the common market into a federal state was agreed between the left-wing parties of Europe and Moscow."

The effort, he said, was the work of socialist groups and parties who were afraid that economic reforms by British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher threatened the achievements of the European left. The establishment of a transnational socialist superstate, he said, was introduced as a means of stopping the "onslaught of what they called ‘wild capitalism.’"

About 1985, he said, the left in Europe "came to the conclusion that if they worked together, they would manage to highjack the whole European project and turn it upside down. Instead of an open market, to make it into a federal state."
