Michael says that it will cost a lot of money to bring back to the Church the last couple of generations. When we have millions of Catholics in church every week and millions of our children in Catholic schools every day for nine months out of the year it shouldn't cost ANYTHING

While I agree with your conclusions, I wonder if it is also a call to another foirm of action by our bishops and Church leaders? You are correct when you say there are two "camps" in our Church-those who attend weekly Mass and those who do not. I suggest we try and find out why people do not come to Mass and develop a plan to bring them back. Essentailly we need to re-evangalize a whole generation or two. It's not going to be easy and yes, it will cost a lot of money. But we need to do something more than put up a sign on the Church announcement board that "Catholics can always come home". We need home missionaries now! We need solid weekly Mass attendess now to reach out to relatives and friends now, but we need to support these folks somehow. I don;t know the exact answer on how to do this, but our US Catholic Bishops should make this a priority or we will continue to lose generations. I know this from my experience as a 7th grade CCD teacher. I don't blame the kids, but most have no clue about Core Catholic teaching and the only time they attend Mass and confession is when we plan it in lieu of an actual class. These kids do not have the support from home- their parents don't understand Church teaching nor do they attend Mass. We need to think of creative and Holy Spirit filled ways to re-evangalize and it must happen now or the ND scandal will only be the tip of the iceburg and I fear eventual schism of the American Catholic Church.
