[...] It was realized that for practical reasons, obedience was necessary, and it was only later that Jesuits realized that their own specific form of mortification and self-abnegation was in the submission of their wills. Once again, this was a discerned election rather than a command. The famous letter on obedience sent to Simon Rodrigues never once mentions a military metaphor. The metaphor of a Jesuit being like a dead corpse in a river is borrowed not from military language but from St. Bonaventure. For more on the nature of Jesuit obedience, see what I wrote here. [...]

The lack of wholeness in Legion formation, its onesidednes and restrictiveness as revealed by Fr. O'Halloran explains a lot. I have come across the Legion and RC a few times over the years and have always been troubled in my spirit by these encounters. Glad I stuck with my gut instinct.

As for the revelations of the founder life and the order's apology it is only a beginning. No matter how well intentioned an individual Legionaire may be it is now clear that a very deep and detailed reflection of their formation and basic attitudes and beliefs about their form of religous life as laid out by their founder needs to be done. The foundation is obviously very flawed.

While it is true that there are many good and holy Jesuits who live their lives according to the guidelines of their Founder, there are many who stand radically against the Church, seeming to think that their intellectual reasoning is wiser than the Church's...there is another issue also...there are good men who have been coerced into leaving Jesuit formation because they would not, could not, accept homosexual behavior...and it is a great moral evil to pervert the young, whether in seminaries or in universities. Perhaps there are Jesuit Universities on the Vatican's approval list...I don't know any. I heard the one in Spokane was getting its act together...and trying to move in step with the teachings of Christ and His Church. The National Catholic Register is under the leadership, I believe,of the Legionaires...yet, I have found it to be completely in line with the teachings of the Church. Not many Jesuit publications can say the same. I love the Jesuits...my confessor for many years is a Jesuit...from Creighton University...I honestly have not heard of any of the radical Jesuits proclaiming their regret at going against the teachings of the Church and showing others how to do the same...as have many of the Legionaries. Did Fr. Drinan ever repent of his radically pro abortion positions? And for having turned others like Ted Kennedy from being ardently pro life to ardently antii-life? The mess the Legionaires are in because of their founder is sorrowful; the mess the Jesuits are in because of straying from the ideals of their founder is frightening because they have so much influence on the young; because many use their intellectual gifts to pervert Catholic teaching...we need to pray for both Communities...and for each other...Sam

Despite the horror of what Maciel has done, I believe the majority of Legionaires are faithful to Christ and His Church; look at so many Jesuits who openly defy papal authority and the teachings of the Church. Look at Jesuit Universities...are they in line with the teachings of the Catholic Church? True, there are many good and faithful Jesuits...I think the Jesuits are intellectually defying the Church on campus and off, while the Legionaires have 'emotionally' drawn into themselves and shut out the authority of the Church...both need to remember who they are called to follow, who they are called to be true to: Christ and His Church and the teachings that come through Christ's Church...and that is true of all of us...look at Rev. Drinan for an example...Sam

The Maciel scandal enables LC/RC to live the cross like never before so I see them becoming an even stronger, vital force within the Church. They are now more Christ-centered than ever. So those who wish to see them 'go away' will have to get used to them!
